Competitive sports or martial arts do not only build up your muscle memory, they also go on to instill some very important life skills in you– often without you even realizing it. Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) combines the usefulness and discipline of martial arts and combat sports in inculcating some of the most essential life skills in you or your child

A BJJ practitioner goes on to develop things such as focus, discipline, empathy, self respect, and courtesy before he or she can be reasonably good at the combat sport itself. All of these qualities make up some of the most basic traits that are found in successful people across every field.

The dynamic mix of intellectual, social, and physical learning that Brazilian jiu jistsu offers will help you to get ahead in life. Below are some of the essential life skills that jiu-jitsu will instill in you.

Build Confidence and Take Control

It might initially seem like a bad idea when you’re getting a beating at the hands of a lot more advanced players at training each day, but remaining consistent will build up confidence in you as you grow to get better at the sport. Confidence is developed once you’ve been thrown out of your comfort zone enough times and jiu-jitsu training will put you through such situations a lot.

Being able to utilize your mind and skills to get out of difficult situations in life is what eventually builds up confidence. Your confidence is nothing but a firm belief in your ability to overcome challenges and make things work no matter what which can only be permanently developed once you have learned to brace difficult situations. Jiu-jitsu training will often trigger that “fight or flight” reaction and condition you to fight and take on the challenges in life. Over time, you will grow as a fighter and the fight response will carry over to your life without you even knowing. Confidence will then be a way of life for you.

Learn To Seize Opportunities

There are moments in life that require a timely response from you and can go on to change your lives forever. These moments will define your life; they will determine what you achieve and where you will eventually end up. You naturally feel compelled to stick to your comfort zone as you feel safe there. However, this inherent hesitation will cost you that brief window of opportunity that could potentially be a life changer for you. After all, these life changing opportunities don’t shine on you every day. Therefore, when they do, it’s your job to seize them.

BJJ training prepares you for such special and rare opportunities in life. Safe zones do not exist in this sport and you are constantly thrown into difficult situations. To be able to get out of these situations, the discipline conditions you to closely watch your surroundings so any and every opportunity can be used to your advantage. The close combat teaches you to constantly look for opportunities and leverage them whenever you can to get out of that choke hold or that closed guar hop or whatever else your opponent throws at you.

It Teaches You Consistency

Every BJJ athlete can vouch for this one. The importance of consistency cannot be emphasized enough.  The arduous and time consuming training sessions that leave you in pain at the end of the day might make you question the wisdom behind the sport; however, over time, as you are able to build your game up and take bigger men down to the ground, you realize that consistently doing what you did has led to the improvement.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu requires consistency just like all the good things in life. Whether it is your business or a career that you’re trying to build from the ground up, learning a craft, or anything else for that matter, it all requires a consistent effort; there is no other way. With constant practice, you will have learned this important life lesson and conditioned your mind a certain way before others. This will greatly improve your prospects in most other areas of life.

You Are Cognizant Of Your Strengths and Weaknesses

Over time, you will learn that there are certain things that you’re naturally good at in the sport. Similarly, there will be some areas of the game that you may not be as good in as the others.

The knowledge of your strengths and weaknesses in this combat sport is extremely important. Knowing your strengths will allow you to leverage them to get out of difficult situations or to pounce at the opportunities as they arise. On the other hand, knowing your weak areas will keep you from relying on them in difficult situations and also to prevent them from being taken advantage of.

The life skills that you can develop from such trainings are indispensible. Your mind is trained to leverage your strengths in every area of life. You learn to accept that there are certain areas that you are weak in and there are things that are your strengths so you learn to play on your strengths instead relying on the weaknesses. This goes on to highly increase your chances of succeeding in life as you focus your resources, energies and time on things that you do best instead of wasting them on something that you don’t.

Staying Calm under Pressure

When you start off as a beginner, there will be moments when you tense up. A new and unknown situation is generally known to have that effect on people. However, as you progress in the sport, you will learn the importance of staying calm and not losing focus even in stressful situations such as when you’re being choked by the opponent.

Staying calm in the face of unknown challenges and difficulties is the art most successful people have mastered in life. BJJ training will teach you this essential life skill. This allows them to focus and look for solutions instead of panicking and it is always the ones who can stay calm under difficult situations that can easily come out on top.

To sum up, over the course of your BJJ training, you will pick up essential life skills that will not only help you to improve and progress in the combat sport, but also make you more likely to be successful and derive more out of life.
